Whether ChatGPT gives a usable or a brilliant answer depends almost entirely on one thing: the prompt. Great prompts follow a clear pattern – and you can use that to your advantage.

The formula for great prompts

A strong prompt answers five questions before the AI starts:

1. Role – "You are an experienced copywriter."
2. Context – what is this about, and for whom?
3. Task – what exactly should be produced?
4. Format – length, tone, structure (e.g. "5 bullet points").
5. Example – a sample for the AI to follow.

Templates by use case

Marketing copy: "You are a copywriter. Write product copy about [product] for [audience]. Tone: [casual/formal]. 3 variants, max 60 words each."

Social post: "Create 5 [platform] post ideas about [topic]. Each with a hook, key message and call-to-action."

Email: "Write a friendly follow-up email to a customer who hasn't replied to my offer. Short, no pressure, with a clear call-to-action."

Common mistakes

• Too vague: "Write something about marketing." Better: specific, with role and format.
• No context: the AI doesn't know your audience unless you name it.
• Everything at once: splitting big tasks into steps gives better results.
